About Me

Aqil Haziq Mahmud is a journalist reporting on Malaysian politics, the environment, defence and security for CNA Digital.

Haziq joined the regional news outlet in 2017, reporting on the Singapore Armed Forces and its military exercises in Australia and the United States. He was also deployed to New Zealand in 2019 to cover the Christchurch mosque shootings.

In 2022, he was tasked to cover Malaysia issues. His first assignment was to report on the country’s 15th general election. He previously reported on Malaysia’s struggles as a plastic waste importer and how its fish farms influenced prices abroad.

Haziq has a communications degree from Nanyang Technological University and was previously news editor of its campus newspaper.

Asia Journalism Fellow 2023

I was among 15 journalists from across Asia to be accepted to the 2023 Asia Journalism Fellowship, which will hold media training, seminars and discussions on a variety of issues.

Story of the Month

My story "COVID-19 social media vigilantes: A valid or harmful way of dealing with rule breakers?" was recognised by Stories of a Pandemic (SOAP) in June 2020 for outstanding published work during the pandemic in Singapore.

Excellence in Reporting on the Environment

My story "Malaysia moves to reap the benefits of processing global plastic waste" was nominated for excellence in environment reporting at The Society of Publishers in Asia (SOPA) awards in 2019.

Top Feature Writing Project

Awarded best feature writing final-year project at the Wee Kim Wee School of Communication and Information in 2017 for investigation into illegal exotic pets in Singapore.

Professional Internship Award

Finished in top 10 percent of the Wee Kim Wee School of Communication and Information cohort during 2016 journalism internship with The New Paper.
